I just had my final meeting with Nature Conservation 07/09/2006 and both Gauteng and Limpopo provinces has said no on breeding and re-introduction permits. Although I do understand some of their concerns I do not agree with them as a whole. Some of the points they made were that the captive animal would not know how to defend itself in nature against their own and other predators, they don't seem to see that the re-introduction part of the trust is only a small portion of the Trust as public awareness and studying the animals in captivity would be the aim for the first 10 to 15 years. On this the comment was if you feed it a pork chop the remnants of a pork chop would come out the other side (Ha Ha at least we now know that they do have the ability to be sarcastic) Other arguments were that there are more than we think on which I asked them why their figures indicate a low number of 5000 to 8000 animals in S.A. They did however agree with me that farms and reserves would be the final end of this animal and agrees with me that public awareness would be the only solution to the problem. This agreeing with me does not help as the fact that they do not support me in writing does not help the trust in getting sponsorship to do educational outings. Like so many non profit organizations we do need a bit of cash to do our day to day work, like petrol to get to talks and visit farms for census and awareness We are going ahead with the breeding program on a small scale. The Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve has paid for the building of our first camps and we are in negotiation with some people that own males to incorporate in this small breeding program. We have started a secondary facility in the Limpopo Province on the Vista Vistas Private Nature Reserve here we aim to study the animals in the wild and allow students access to study other species as well.
