Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Brown Hyena Survival Trust to raise public awareness of the state of the animal and to make sure that future generations have Brown Hyenas to view in nature.

History

Albert Kriel worked as Lodge manager outside the small town of Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province where one night on his way home he came across a brown hyena, after the initial shock he got interested in the animal and started following the footprints and scent markings. Wanting to know more he turned to the Internet to find more information finding the site of an Namibian organisation by the name of strandwolf sparked the Brown Hyena Survival Trust to be born.

During the December of 2005 he decided to sit with 7 Cheetahs for a whole month to raise public awareness for the trust and the animal. But most of all to get the South African Nature Conservation to support him in his effort.

He is still waiting to get the permit but has started the program on a small scale on the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve where Mr. Ed Hern has permits to hold the animals thus he is entitled to have them breed. The idea to go on with breeding without the possibility to re-introduce is to build up the amount of animals, as there are a limited amount of captive animals available for this breeding program.
