Human Vs Animal

Before farms, towns and roads the animals roamed free throughout the Southern part of Africa but then we came and did a lot of damage to the breeding and future of the Brown Hyena.

As the alpha male is non resident in the clan structure we have created islands of animals that cannot cross and mate.

Fences erected to keep livestock and game in also keep the alpha male and female apart. As mentioned earlier in ideal situations we should have 3 to 5 young every 25 months with this obstacle we now have non.

A further problem with the fences are feeding area of the animal as they would forage long distances in a natural environment fences block them and the once non preferential hunter becomes a hunter due to necessity.

The Brown Hyena's feeding consist of less than 2,5 % life kill around 40% fruit and veg. and the balance would then be carrion.

Now the once non-hunter and the farmer meet over the barrel of a gun as he is loosing livestock due to fencing the animal in. One solution would be to open the fence every 1Km 400mm X 400mm to allow the animals to cross. as this might sound like the answer some of the animals that grew up hunting would never change their habits.

Numerous animals get killed on roads annually as they forage and follow the scent of an ovulating female. Unfortunately there is no solution to this problem, people should please be more aware of roaming animals.
